PUBLIC LECTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH
Tue 11 November 2008 - 5.30pm
Pedro Ignacio Alonso PREMODERN POSTDIGITAL
This lecture will explore the different trajectories taken by the longstanding conviction that architectural form is nothing but the logical consequence of technique. We will challenge this pre-modern ideal by analyzing the manner in which it has become into the powerful post-digital argument that sees form as the result of the equilibrium of forces acting upon architectural production. By rejecting history as a continuous and coherent progression we will test the 'epistemological break' with the past performed in both pre-modern and post-digital conditions when looking for the transformation of architectural design into a coherent discourse on fabrication.

Speaker: Pedro Ignacio Alonso studied architecture at the Universidad Católica de Chile and completed his PhD at the Architectural Association. His thesis analyses a series of arguments and rhetorical strategies that were central in the modernist conceptualization of architecture as a work of assemblage. Since 2005 he has taught architectural theory at the Architectural Association, where he currently teaches at the Masters Programme in Histories and Theories. Together with Hugo Palmarola, he has recently been awarded with the RIBA Research Trust 2008 for their research on the Soviet KPD System and the politics of Cold War prefabrication. He works for Arup's Urban Design, practice where he has collaborated in the design of a number of large-scale projects in China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. Recent publications include Acronym (AA Files 57, November 2008).
